Hello friends,
Welcome to spring. According to the Chinese calendar we have been in the beginning of spring since February 4th. On February 19th we entered into the second phase of spring called “Yu Shui” which means “Rain Water” and signifies there will be a greater chance of rain than snow falling. These phases of the calendar are correlated to the movement of the sun and the longitudinal lines of the planet. They help all of us stay in harmony with nature.
So what does that mean? Our bodies and minds have spent the winter introverting, moving less, reflecting more and preparing for the next movements of our lives. As spring arrives we feel the energy of the planet come alive, our ambition kicks in and we feel a desire to forge new paths and explore new ideas.
So what do we do now? This is the time to begin to move, stretch out and change. In our physical lives this means getting our bodies ready to go out and play hard and challenge ourselves. But before you run a marathon this spring, or whatever your physical goals are, make sure you take time to let your body wake up to the spring energy surging within it.
Low impact, non complicated movement is a good place to start, biking in the low gears, walking and jogging, jumping and bouncing, these are all great things to do now to get you ready to push physically as the weather warms up.
At this point your diet should switch out of the heavier wintery foods, like carbs and sugars. You should head into vegetables, particularly long leafy greens (rich in vitamins A, C, K, iron and calcium), small fish high in omega 3 fatty acids (like sardines), some meats, Chinese Medicine likes Lamb (antibiotic and hormone free of course). And remember to hydrate more to help your kidneys shift into a lower carb higher protein diet.
Emotionally you should use what I like to call “functional anger” (which is the emotion of this season) we use this anger to drive our ambition in life as well as to work our muscles and sinews (the corresponding tissue to this season).
So get a little angry about some situation you don’t like anymore and then let that anger drive your ambition towards your new goal.In March we will talk more deeply about the art of stretching.
Love from all of us at the Droge Clinic
